Patient Comfort: Sedation Dentistry and Profound Anesthesia

Andrew Biggs, D.M.D. understands that dental anxiety is a very real issue for many of his patients. To ease the anxiety some people feel regarding a visit to the dentist, Dr. Biggs has taken care to ensure that his patients remain as comfortable as possible throughout their visits with him. Thanks to the genuine smiles and friendly demeanors of his administrative staff as well as the soothing atmosphere Dr. Biggs has created in his waiting and treatment areas, patients are instantly put at ease when they come to see him. When patients enter our treatment rooms, they are settled in comfortable, reclining dental treatment chairs and provided with headphones to listen to the music of their choice. In addition, Dr. Biggs often uses air abrasion, or drilless dentistry, which eliminates the high-pitched drilling noises that have made patients uncomfortable in the past, and which also dramatically reduces the discomfort that patients experience.

Sedation Dentistry

Dr. Biggs is pleased to offer conscious sedation to his patients who struggle with dental anxiety. With sedation dentistry, patients simply swallow a small pill shortly before receiving treatment, and then spend the duration of their time in the treatment chair in a state of mellow relaxation. Sedation dentistry is an ideal solution for patients who wish to undergo multiple procedures, such as a smile makeover, during a single visit to our cosmetic and implant dentist on the Northside of Spokane.

Profound Anesthesia

Dr. Biggs also offers profound anesthesia with septocaine, which has been found to be more effective than traditional novocaine. With septocaine profound anesthesia, Dr. Biggs’ patients who do not wish to undergo sedation can still remain comfortable during their visits. If you suffer from dental anxiety but would still like to get the treatment you need and deserve, contact the office of Andrew Biggs, D.M.D. today to speak to a compassionate professional about ways to combat this anxiety.

Infection Control

Our entire office is committed to protecting our patients and our staff from the transmission of communicable diseases. Each time a patient visits our office, a very special trust is placed in our hands. We do not take that trust lightly. The use of gloves, masks, protective eyewear, and plastic equipment covers are some of the more visible steps that we take to ensure your safety. Any item that is used with a patient is either disposed of or heat sterilized. The instruments are packaged so that they are not touched before actual setup in the treatment room, and then only with gloved hands. We hope you appreciate the lengths we go to in the process of ensuring that your environment is sterile when you visit our office.

Technology

Cosmetic and implant dentist Andrew Biggs, D.M.D. is pleased to employ the latest in technology at his Northside Spokane practice. The state-of-the-art equipment he uses can make your visit with him more comfortable, convenient, and efficient than you ever believed possible.

Drilless Dentistry

Drilless dentistry, formally known as air abrasion, is an exciting technological advance employed by our cosmetic and implant dentist on the Northside of Spokane. Dr. Biggs can use air abrasion to replace the noisy and uncomfortable traditional drill that many patients have come to fear. With drilless dentistry, a stream of non-toxic powder is used to “sandblast” small amounts of decayed tooth material away. Dr. Biggs can also use air abrasion to prepare teeth for restorative dentistry procedures, to remove stains, and to repair old sealants. Since air abrasion is so precise, it affects much less of the healthy tooth structure than older techniques do. Best of all, there is often no need for any type of anesthetic before a drilless dentistry procedure, so patients can enjoy a much quicker and more comfortable visit.

DIAGNOdent®

The DIAGNOdent® laser makes it easy for Dr. Biggs to locate cavities and tooth decay far earlier than was formerly possible. Using a special DIAGNOdent® wand, Dr. Biggs can scan a patient’s mouth and project a detailed image of the teeth onto a computer screen, where he can see if there is any decay hidden in cracks and crevices that would not normally be visible, even with x-rays. The result is earlier discovery of cavities and tooth decay, which means earlier treatment and less pain, expense, and damage to our patients’ teeth.

Arestin™

Arestin™ is a new antibiotic treatment for periodontal (gum) disease. When bacteria collect on or under the gums, they can cause pain and damage to the teeth, ligaments, and bones in the mouth. If left untreated, periodontal disease can cause tooth loss, and has even been connected to such serious health threats as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Arestin™ is a fine powder that Dr. Biggs can place in the gum pockets created by disease, where it combats and dramatically reduces bacteria growth, inflammation, swelling, and bleeding of the gums. If you suspect that you may have periodontal disease or otherwise unhealthy gums, contact the office of Andrew Biggs, D.M.D. Our skillful dentist on the Northside of Spokane can examine your gums and help you form a treatment plan.

Digital Imaging

Many patients are hesitant to undergo cosmetic dentistry treatments because they are unsure of what the results will look like. When you visit Dr. Biggs, he will use digital dental imaging to give you a preview of just how beautiful your smile can be. In this process, Dr. Biggs will project a photograph of your current smile onto a computer screen and then alter the image to show you the potential effects of cosmetic procedures such as teeth whitening and porcelain veneers. You can even take a photo home with you!

Digital X-Rays

In the past, many dental patients were hesitant to have their teeth imaged by x-rays for fear that the radiation exposure would adversely affect their health. This issue is no longer a worry for our patients as Dr. Biggs is proud to employ all-digital x-rays, which reduce radiation exposure by up to 90 percent. In addition to improved safety, this technology also offers enhanced comfort to our patients, as well as remarkably faster and more detailed results for Dr. Biggs and his team.
